Abstract

In the process beginning with the end of the 1970s, a political change occurred in USA and England as the powerful and initiator states of the west. New politics were based on free market economy oriented new economics. In the economic sense, private enterprise system instead of the public one became important. It did not take too long for this western change to involve the whole world. In Turkey, in the process starting after the 1980 military coup, the first civilian government which took the lead followed the neoliberal policies of USA and Europe. In the process after the 1980, new nongovernmental organizations were added to the ones which were founded in the 1980 military coup’s eve. Nongovernmental organizations such as TÜSİAD (Turkish Industrialists’ and Businessmen’s Association), MÜSİAD (Independent Industrialists and Businessmen’s Association), SİAD to become prominent is relevant to the differentiation of economic policies. New global order’s bases were city and nongovernmental organizations. On the one hand, industrial cities of modern times were losing its old regard, and on the other hand, a new city model occurred which is called “ the global city” as a result of the growing global relationships. To become a global city has some criteria (city’s business capacity, human capital, information interchange, cultural experiences, and political obligations). Some regulations (refunctioning the old industrial and historical areas, urban transformation projects) have been made for the cities to perform their new roles. Accordingly, in Turkey, all these enterprises are the steps towards the west/global order harmonization process. Globalization has caused several changes on the social identity by affecting local values of communities. Different groups of the society have benefited from the free market economy after 1980. New market conditions have provided a new bourgeoisie to come out and develop; therefore, the definition of conservatism in modern world has given way to a notion of new conservatism in postmodern world. In this study, the position of global market conditions in Turkey is taken into consideration by means of Istanbul Wholesaler Market Trade Centre Site (İstanbul Toptancılar Çarşısı Ticaret Merkezi Sitesi) ISTOC and its mosques in the context of compatibility and differentiation of Islam with global order, consumption, transportation, tourism, culture, trade, economics as a ground of international relations. Besides the geographical position of ISTOC (on TEM motorway and highwayairway- seaway networks) and embodiment of symbolic buildings of globalisation (hotel, shopping centre, auto car and trade centre), the two mosques attached to the building complex of the site emphasizes the local values. ISTOC Trade Centre Site and its mosques are different from modern style and concrete examples of global-conservatism belonging to postmodern period as a type of new conservatism. Whereas ISTOC Trade Centre complies with the West from the point of holding the characteristics of the globalisation, it is distinguished by emphasizing the local values with its mosques. However, this distinction does not conflict with the global order; conversely, it is a kind of compatible distinction in the boundaries of global order. Thus, it is the representation of global- conservative identity and the direction of social transformation in Turkey.
