The effect of burlesque and travesty literary tradition on the translation of classic parody novels

The article outlines the evolution of the translation tradition of burlesque and travesty adaptatins viewed as inherent to Ukrainian literature in its formative stages (18th and 19th centuries). The strategy of domestication was examined regarding the degree to which translators make a text conform to the target culture. Parody, which in the case of some earlier adaptations could be considered a synonym of translation, in the 20th century evolved into a literary genre requiring a faithful rendering in translation. Lexico-stylistic means of creating ‘intra-’ and ‘intertextual’ parody in classic novels ‘Don Quixote’ and ‘Gargantua and Pantagruel’ are analyzed. Translators’ skilful use of folk humour tradition characteristic of the Ukrainian identity contributed to achieving functional adequacy of the target text. The article discusses the impact of the ‘baroque’ school within Ukrainian literary translation, which proved particularly appropriate for reproducing parodic texts.
