Abstract

Treatment of atherosclerotic lower limb ischemia in patients with distal or multifocal arterial lesion is one of the most challenging issues confronting vascular surgeons and angiologists. Patients who are not candidates for open or endovascular reconstruction need a reasonable alternative treatment. Discoveries made by scientists in the last decades introduce a new therapeutic strategy for patients with chronic lower limb ischemia: artificial induction of angiogenesis with gene therapy. The article describes parameters of macro- and microhemodynamics, safety and efficacy of gene therapy with plasmid DNA encoding vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) isoform VEGF165 in patients with chronic lower limb ischemia.
