INTONATIONAL PROMINENCE CATEGORY AS A MARKER OF THEME AND RHEME STRUCTURE OF SOUND TEXT (ON THE MATERIAL OF INFORMATION AND CONVERSATIONAL STYLE)

Modern researches in the field of phonetics of English pay special attention to questions of functioning of intonation at the level of the text. The text as expression of communicative unit of the addressant consists of unequal elements within the meaning and the communicative importance. Such aspect of the organization of information structure of the message as theme and rheme progression, which is an indicator of the semantic relations between statement units is considered in the article. In the course of oral implementation of the message the main means marking semantic structure of the text is intonation. Realization of this function of intonation can be described through prominence category. In the article importance of studying of intonation role in the semantic organization of the sound text is accented and the general regularities of intonational registration of lexical units of the message come to light that shows legitimacy of application of universal prominence category to research theme and rheme organization of the whole text.
