Abstract
Teachers play a great role in providing comfort and social peace, socializing individuals and preparing them for their social lives and transfering the culture and values of the society to the next generations. Knowing the child during these critical years and discovering his abilities and helping him consciously are te acher’s responsibility. In this context, it is obvious that the teacher’s knowledge, applications and expectations regarding the education of values effect the value education in schools. The purpose of the present study is to identify elementary school te achers’ views regarding education of values, education applications, resources they use and difficulties they face. Within the frame of this general purpose answer to the following questions were investigated: (1) Is it important to give education of value s at schools? (2) What are the applications in terms of education of values? (3) What are the sources that are used while applying education of values? (4) What are the most frequent difficulties faced in education of values and suggestions to solve these problems (while studying with students, applying the activities, with regard to families and others)? The present study was conducted in cooperation with Turgut Özal University and Ankara Directorate of National Education The study group is formed with 78 teachers working in Elmadağ district of Ankara. Qualitative research model was the method and questionnaire was the data collection tool in the present study. The validity of the questionnaire is provided by asking expert opinions At first, 100 form was de livered to the teachers but as a result of some unanswered questions in some forms, these forms we re not inclded to the survey . W ell answered 78 forms were examined. Teachers’ explanations on values education were examined. According to the results; it is found that, teachers find essential to teach values in schools, and they apply various studies regarding education of values (such as applying projects, preparing visual sources like posters, brochures, billboards and series, organizing drama - theatre event s), internet is the most common resource for them. In terms of difficulties, parents, the selection of activities, and how to apply these activities are the challenges they encounter. Key Words: Values, Values Education, Teachers
