Abstract
The objectives of this research were, firstly, to study and analyse the instruction models used in the Master’s and Doctoral Degree in Public Policy and Public Management, Departmentof Social Science,Facultyof Social Sciences and Humanities, Mahidol University. Secondly, it was designed to study the student needs on teaching methods being employed in the above-mentioned programmes. Finally, the research was aimed at providing recommendations on teaching methods and guidelines suitable for the student needs. Regarding the research methodology, qualitative research incorporating documentary research, in-depth interview and focus group techniques were used to collect data from faculty members, master’s and doctoral students of these two programmes. The results demonstrated that there were several instruction models currently in use among teaching personnel in Master’s and Doctoral Degree in Public Policy and Public Management Programme, including, the Concept Attainment Model, Memory Model, Torrance’s Future Problem Solving Instruction Model, Direct Instruction Model, Graphic Organiser Instruction Model and so on. As per teaching methods preferred among students, there were 7 areas of needs and improvements identified as follows: 1) lecture handouts; 2) a combinationof classroom teachings with field trips; 3) assignments relevant tostudents learning experience; 4) teaching and learning environment; 5) instructors and experts; 6) English proficiencies; and 7) teaching styles. The recommendations put forward in this research included: firstly, on research module, the Graphic Organiser Instruction Model, Interactive Q&A Model, Creative Thinking Model were the key teaching methods. Secondly, on theoretical module, the Interactive Q&A Model and classroom teaching with field trips were recommended. Finally, on theory application module, Inductive Thinking Model and the use of outside experts were the main recommendations.
