A. I. Chemerissky's activity in the Municipal Duma of Katerynoslav in the autumn of 1917

Abstract

Alexander Ilich Chemerissky (1880–1942) – the participant of the Jewish revolutionary movement in Russia, the public figure, the publicist. His activity in the municipal duma of Ekaterinoslav in the autumn of 1917 did not still become the object of special research. A. I. Chemerissky was born in 1880 in the city Bar of Podolsk province. In 1898–1901, 1904–1919 – a member of Bund. One of the organizers of the Jewish independent workers' party (1901 – 1903). The active participant of revolution 1905–1907. Till 1917 was arrested repeatedly, lived in exile. In 1917–1919 – a member of Central Committee Bund. In August, 1917 he was selected to the member of the municipal duma of Ekaterinoslav. He worked actively in the council in September – November, 1917. As the representative of the block of Mensheviks and Bund acted no less than ten times at sessions on various topics (about mutiny of Kornilov, labour exchange, workers' and employees' of the Belgian tram demands, inclusion of Ekaterinoslavsky province in structure of Ukraine, committee on struggle against anarchy, creation of school committee, events in Petrograd in the end of October, etc.). Took of a principle class position, defended interests of proletariat, supported revolution gains. The evolution of his sights, which have led from Bund to RCP (b) was observed. In 1919 A. I. Chemerissky – one of organizers of Komfarband. In 1920 he became a member of RCP (b). In 1920th years – the secretary of the Central bureau of the Jewish section, was the supporter of assimilation of Jews, opposed the provision of a territorial autonomy for them. In 1934 he was excluded from members UCP(b), he was arrested and for three years banished to Kazakhstan. In 1939 he was arrested again. In 1941 he was condemned to 10 years of camps. He died on 17th February, 1942.
