Abstract
Most of the metals and alloys when subjected to severe environment undergo wear and corrosion. Protecting them from wear and corrosion. Protecting them from wear and corrosion is the challenge faced by most of the metal working industries today. Thermally sprayed coatings are known to increase the functional lifetime of metals. However, the choice of coating materials depends upon the intended use and the environment in which the material is used. Ceramics are deployed as coatings on the surface to be protected. Addition of rare earth metal oxides in ceramic coatings improve the erosion, corrosion and mechanical properties. In this paper we review the effect of rare earth metal oxides on thermally sprayed ceramic coatings. We also discuss some of the recent development in post thermal treatments of coatings.
