Abstract

The article studies the stages of formation of the concept of connotation in linguistics in a historical perspective. The specific contents of the term in the logicalphilosophical, semiotic, pragmatic, lexicological, linguocultural and stylistic approaches are discussed. The term “connotation” was introduced within the logicalphilosophical paradigm to point out the features by means of which an object can be counted to a class of objects.
