Abstract
Background: Previous studies have suggested that adipokines play a role in inflammatory bowel disease by inducing proinflammatory cytokines, but it is uncertain whether visfatin is causally involved in ulcerative colitis (UC). Aim and objectives: was to evaluate serum Visfatin levels in patients with UC and its correlation with the activity of disease. Subjects and methods: This is a prospective study, was carried out on forty UC patients, attending to internal medicine department, Elsaiedgalal university hospital, and ten subjects apparently healthy volunteers as a control. Result: Visfatin, active patients group showed significantly higher levels compared to remission group (7.45 ? 0.85 Vs 5.35 ? 0.80 with p-value = 0.000). Conclusion: The visfatin level was higher in the active group than in post?treatment remission and the healthy control group. Sensitivity and specificity were similar to other inflammatory markers for assessing clinical activity, which did not improve clinical outcomes in patients with acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS).
