Abstract
The following article includes the portraitist of the XIX century D. M. Bolotov, descendant of the famous encyclopedist of the XVIII centure A. T. Bolotov (1738–1833). D. M. Bolotov graduated from the St. Petersburg Academy of Painting in 1865 and became famous portraitist in 1886 entered the Optina monastery, where he painted portraits of known ecclesiastics, among them the most famous portrait of reverend Ambrose of Optina. Diary is illustrated the evolution from secular to spiritual creativity, reveals views on human and painter destiny.
