Abstract
Background. Elderly patients represent a special population group who require a wide range of medical and social services. Objective. To analyze the results of research on the quality of life of elderly patients who stay in medical and social institutions. Material and methods. We performed a qualitative analysis of 35 Russian and English literature sources, which most fully reflect the quality of life problems of elderly patients in medical and social institutions. Results. The staying of elderly patients in the medical and social institutions was established to lead to decreased quality of life scores due to the limited employment opportunities, lack of household comfort, limited living space, psychological problems, increased dependence on others and care taking personnel. Conclusions. Underestimating of the elderly patients status along with their limited access to medical and social care in order to sustain an optimal level of physical, mental and social well-being leads to the deterioration of their health status and reduced quality of life parameters.
