Abstract

The article deals with the modal phrases of preference-comparison in terms of their semantic and pragmatic characteristics, as well as modal functions implemented in the utterance by means of the English lan- guage. The author undertakes an actual complex approach to the study of preference-comparison modality as a polymodality expressed in the form of modal phrases in the context of analyzing the problems of axiological modality of a literary text. As a result of the research, the concepts about the modality of a literary text, as well as about syntactic, logical, and grammatical modal phrases of preference-comparison in the system of preferen- tial utterances have been deepened
