Abstract

The article is concerned with one of the factors in the current language situation in Ukraine — the mutual relation between the choice of language and the language code of communication in general for certain population groups and their preferences for belonging to a particular denomination or at least for committing themselves to the corresponding tradition and culture, since the multilingual situation, featuring massive Ukrainian-Russian bilingualism, gets more complicated due to multiconfessionalism that exists in Ukraine. The complex of problems of language and confessional relations is further complicated by the presence of significant variability within the confessional style of the Ukrainian language. Problematic aspects of language and confessional self-identification of various population groups are also analyzed according to a sociological survey conducted in the summer of 2014 in the region of Central Ukraine. The survey included not only two national / standard languages, Ukrainian and Russian, but also the Ukrainian-Russian «surzhyk» as a separate language code (although such term is largely relative, since the structure of «surzhyk» is primarily based on the Ukrainian language).
