Abstract

During the COVID-19 pandemic, new opportunities and forms of teaching, learning, communication and research opened up for millions of students, teachers and researchers. It is clear that the impact of COVID-19 on the higher education system has been enormous. Many universities had flexible responses to the crisis, but statistics from a survey by the International University Association (UIA) show that not all higher education institutions were ready to provide full-fledged online programs. The article analyzes the problems of the crisis in the educational sphere during the COVID-19 pandemic, solutions and forms of support by governments of different countries and international organizations. The research showed data of UIA global survey on the impact of COVID-19 on higher education worldwide discovering that almost two-thirds of respondents who answered questions about their chosen form of education said that teaching was conducted distantly. This result is consistent with U-Multirank data showing that almost 60% of universities worldwide reported online learning conditions in their strategic planning for COVID-19 [4]. The International Association of Universities (UIA) founded in 1950 under the auspices of UNESCO, is a leading global association of higher educational institutions and organizations around the world. UIA brings together its members from more than 120 countries to reflect on and act on common priorities. UIA is an independent non-governmental organization and an official partner of UNESCO. UIA is the voice of higher education for UNESCO and other international organizations and provides a global forum for leaders of institutions and associations. Its services are made available as a matter of priority to members, as well as to organizations, institutions and authorities involved in higher education, as well as policy makers, professionals, administrators, teachers, researchers and students.
