Abstract

The article examines the impact of the rules of the native language on learning a foreign language. At the present stage the necessity of considering the impact of the native language is recognized as an important methodological principle of learning a foreign language. Knowledge of universal linguistic categories or linguistic universals that are present in the most languages of the world, and the ability to use them in speech creates a special kind of linguistic knowledge to develop linguistic competence, which contributes to a more durable mastering of a foreign language rules. Taking into consideration the rules of the native language, knowledge of the lexical and grammatical norms of the native language is the basis for predicting difficulties in learning one or another grammatical phenomenon and it also contributes to find the most effective ways to prevent and correct grammar mistakes. In the article special attention is paid to such linguistic phenomena as cross-language grammatical transference and interference, which are considered the most typical cases of manifestations of these phenomena; exercises promoting the most effective learning of English grammar are represented too
