Manipulative potential of verbal and non-verbal means of modern political texts

Abstract

The article deals with issues relating to the study and analysis of the manipulative potential of verbal and non-verbal means of modern political texts, the basic mechanisms of creation, implementation and operation of texts of political discourse. Author reveals both verbal means ? lexical items, stylistic methods and non-verbal means ? graphic, figurative, thar are combined with verbal or separately used to manipulate the consciousness of audience. Object of scientific research is printed texts of modern political media that use verbal and non-verbal implementers of manipulative strategies and tactics. It’s essential to emphasize that the main purpose of verbal and non-verbal means of manipulative tactics used in the modern political texts is to create a positive or negative perception of the information. It can be reached by usage of lexis with peyorative connotation during special labeling tactics to indicate the negative effects, different neologisms. Besides it is found that strategy of misrepresentation is widely spread because of number of repetitions, fragmentation information, exaggerating of the facts. As for graphic and expressive elements author makes a conclusion that graphical tools of the text contribute to its clear visualization, intensifing manipulative potential of the verbal message.
