Abstract

The life and activity of French scientist S.-A. Zhiliber who was born in 1780 in Grodno which was a part of the Polish- Lithuanian Commonwealth is being described for the first time. In 1775 King S.-A. Ponyatovskiy invited his father Doctor of Medicine and Professor Zh.-E. Zhiliber to work in this city from Lyon. His son had a happy life during the first years of his life in Grodno and Vilno. But in 1783 because of the family drama his parents returned with him to Lyon. According to their advice he graduated from the University in Montpellier and became Doctor of Medicine and Biology. He taught Botanics and Geography at the Lyon Academy, headed City Botanical Garden. Zhiliber is the author of a number of scientific publications. He owned a manor, a collection of plants and paintings. He did charity work.
