Abstract
The article provides an overview of the history of Australian words and specifics of national semantics of some Australian lexical items. Currently, there is an increased interest in the worldwide spread of the English language and its varieties. If previously the British English was considered the only standard English, now the right of numerous varieties and dialects of the English language to exist is recognized. The article details the history of the formation of the Australian variety of English: from the history of the Australian vocabulary to the linguistic aspects of the relations between language and culture in different historical periods that influenced the creation of Australian English. The primary objective of this study is to describe the main trends in the development of the English language in Australia. This language is considered in close relation with the facts of social life of its creators and bearers, with their history, geography, life, culture and literature. The totality of this knowledge comprises the world of the target language, which must be penetrated in order to fully understand linguistic phenomena.
