Abstract

School education has unquestionable importance in people's lives, which becomes a right for all and a duty of the family and the State, with learning to write and read a fundamental step towards its success. Considering that education needs to be inclusive and that all children must be literate, this article discusses the literacy process of a child with Autistic Spectrum Disorder (ASD), addressing a qualitative, exploratory research, carried out with a teacher of a private elementary school, whose literacy training was developed with an autistic student. The objective was to understand how the literacy process of these students takes place and the way they react to literacy practices in regular education. The results show that inclusion methods and collaborative practices in the literacy process are essential to enhance the learning and development of autistic students. They also signal the need for the school to carry out collaborative work, able to favor the development of student learning, as well as the relevance of the sensitivity and commitment of the teacher to organize their planning in order to focus on the real needs of students so that, this way, to build an inclusive school.
