Abstract

The SS Missouri, the biggest warship of the US Navy which acquired a historial significance because of the fact that the Japonese surrender agreement was signed on board of this ship after World War II, visited the Harbour of İstanbul between April 5-9. This visit, which was the first step of the Cold War, in other words the first attempt of the US to establish a powerful naval force around the Mediterranean was observed by both the world public and the inhabitants of İstanbul. The apparement motive behind the Missouri's visit was to bring the body of Muñir Ertegün, the Turkish Ambassador, to his native country. However, the actual reason was to warn the Soviet government and to give support to the anticommunist powers in the south of Soviet Union. Missouri was visited by both the political and religious leaders in Pireus and Naples. The Greek Patriarch and the Pope hosted the crew of the Missouri. This exagerated show lasted for a month and ended in Morocco.
